This is just a little bit about us “the Roe family and River House”

Alex and I have over 20 years experience in the hospitality industry. After we first met at catering college in Scarborough, we then went on to work in Chester, and returned to Yorkshire in 1997 to work in the city of York.

We moved to the beautiful village of Malham in the June of 2004 with our two daughters, Abigail and Amelia, having bought River House. Soon after opening we were awarded a Breakfast Award by the AA and in 2007 we were awarded a Dinner Award also by the AA.

In 2008 we joined Deliciously Yorkshire, which promotes the use of local produce by its members, and for this we are Deliciously Yorkshire breakfast members.

About River House

Parts of the house date back to 1664 when it was just a small cottage in the village of Malham, with the original date stone over what would have been the front door, now in the center of the house. In 1879 the front Victorian house was built on the back of the old cottage. The rear of the house is used as a dining room and lounge bar area and upstairs there are 4 en-suite bedrooms, these used to be the village dance hall called St Georges Hall and was altered to the room you see now in the late 70s.

River House has been a hotel/guests house since the 1950s having changed its name from Airedale Hotel and Sparth House, and since the 1990s it has had the name we know it as today (River House).

Since we moved in to River House we have acquired our dog Poppy, a Weimaraner, and our cat Heidi and more recently we seem have taken on the sum of 8 chickens, which all have names from Mrs Bell, Margo to Smartie, they have settled in lovely and are all happily laying eggs for breakfast, sometimes they can be found looking through the dining room windows as guests tuck in to their breakfast's. And for 2010 we have welcomed Archie to our home our Jack Russel puppy.

Alex and I would like to think that when guests stay with us at River House they find it like a home from home, nothing is ever to much trouble, you only have to ask.
